21 April 2004
Lobby of Parliament on Justice for Road Traffic Victims, House
of Commons, Committee Room 14, 12.30 - 2.30 pm.
On 21 April, to mark World Health Day dedicated to Safer
Roads under the slogan "Road Safety is no Accident", legal, medical
and other relevant professionals, as well as people bereaved and
injured through road crashes will make presentations to relevant
ministers and to MPs on issues of inequity and neglect suffered by
road traffic victims. After the meeting, individuals attending it
will be lobbying their MPs individually on these issues.
The Lobby is organised by RoadPeace, the UK's only specialist
charity for all road traffic victims, whose members have written to
their MPs urging them to attend the meeting and to be available
afterwards for a personal meeting and discussion.
They had also asked them to sign EDM 946, tabled on 30 March by
Andrew Miller MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for
Justice for Road traffic Victims. RoadPeace had set up this
Parliamentary Group in 1998, which now has 125 members from both
Houses and continues to grow.
The areas that will be addressed at the Lobby are:
- victims' right to information &
consultation
- criminal proceedings to bring justice
- road crash investigations to national
standards
- reform of civil proceedings to bring justice
- medical (physical and psychological) care to
national standards
- joint government strategy to address this issue in
partnership
RoadPeace had also so far delivered over 30,000 signatures of a
Petition in respect of a law change, and will deliver further
signatures at the Lobby Meeting.
Brigitte Chaudhry, National Secretary of RoadPeace,
said:
"Bereaved and injured road traffic victims are the forgotten
victims, and road deaths and injuries resulting from road violence
continue to be treated shabbily. As advocates for road victims, we
want to help them influence their MPs, so that the deaths of their
loved ones, or life-shattering injuries, are not pointless
sacrifices, but instruments for change. The Media play a vital role
in bringing about this change."
