Guide to creating a memorial
Your memorial can include:
- a picture of your loved one, the victim of a road
crash;
- as much or as little as you want to say in their memory,
and
- the circumstances and date of the crash.
All submissions to this site are subject to our terms and policy.
How to use the service: The service is entirely
internet based. We don't accept requests by email or other
means; instead we ask you to provide the necessary information
online. We can then create a memorial for you. There are four
steps:
- Tell us about yourself (note that we only publish your
relationship to the victim).
- Tell us about the person commemorated, and if you wish
select a symbol of remembrance (a cross or other religious
symbol, or a bunch of flowers).
- Upload a picture of the person. (Optional)
- Look at a preview of your memorial and make any
alterations.
We suggest that you look at some of the existing memorials,
to help you to think about what to say, and then write it out
for yourself, so that you can be confident about it when you
come to that part of the process.
You may also write about the crash; many people
include a short description of what happened. Again we suggest
that you write out beforehand what you want to say about
it.
Please note, however, that we cannot publish material that may
be interpreted as defaming or libelling anyone, and so you
cannot name other people involved in the crash. The reviewer's
decision concerning the suitability of content is final.
You can include a picture of your loved one. We need
a digital picture in the JPEG format; if you have it in another
format then most photo or image software will allow you to save
another copy of it in JPEG format. We need the file to be less
than 100Kb in size, so you may need to try saving it with
different settings until you get the size right. If you
don't have a digital photograph you can scan a printed
photograph; many internet cafes, camera shops and other local
businesses offer such services and may therefore be able to
assist you if required. When you upload the picture our
system will automatically resize it if necessary and display it
to you for review; if you're not happy with the result you can
upload a different picture or just another version of the same
one.
When you've gone through the process and checked your
memorial, it won't appear immediately. We'll review it first;
we have to reserve the right to edit or reject submissions for
your protection and ours. As soon as it's approved it will be
made public and if you've given us an email address we will
email you accordingly.
When a memorial already exists you can't create a new
one, but you or family or friends can add tributes. See Guide to adding a tribute.
You can create a single memorial for more than one
person, for example when more than one person died in a
single crash. Although you can still only provide one image, if
you have separate pictures then most photo or image software
will let you place the pictures side by side (for example) to
make a new image which you can then upload to the memorial.
You can tell other people about the memorial by using
the "tell a friend" button below the memorial.
RoadPeace makes no charge for the memorial service. We do
rely on public support for our work on behalf of victims of
road crashes, so when you create a memorial we invite a
voluntary donation; we suggest £20 and would of course be
grateful for more. You can make an
online credit card donation or set up a
Direct Debit online, and if you want to join RoadPeace or
contribute to our efforts then click Contact
Us.
If you experience any technical difficulties using this
service or wish to let us know what you think of it then please
contact us using the feedback
form.
